The history of EMAG dates back to 1950s. In 1957 Centralne Biuro Konstrukcji Maszyn Górniczych (Mining Machines Construction Centre) and Instytut Mechanizacji Górnictwa (Mining Mechanization Institute) joined together to form Instytut Doświadczalno-Konstrukcyjny Przemysłu Węglowego (Experimental and Construction Institute of the Mining Industry) whose name was changed to Zakłady Konstrukcyjno-Mechanizacyjne Przemysłu Węglowego (Construction and Mechanization Company of the Mining Industry) in 1958. At the beginning of 1975 two new organizations emerged from the Institute: Centralny Ośrodek Projektowo-Konstrukcyjny KOMAG (Design and Construction Centre KOMAG) based in Gliwice and Ośrodek Badawczo-Rozwojowy Systemów Mechanizacji, Elektrotechniki i Automatyki Górniczej SMEAG (R&D Centre of Mechanization Systems for Electrical Engineering and Automation in Mining SMEAG) based in Katowice.

On the 1st of January 1976 SMEAG was incorporated into a newly established organization – Centrum Naukowo-Produkcyjne EMAG (Science and Production Centre EMAG) which changed its name into Ośrodek Badawczo-Rozwojowy Elektrotechniki i Automatyki Górniczej EMAG (R&D Centre of Electrical Engineering and Automation in Mining EMAG) and then to Centrum Elektryfikacji i Automatyzacji Górnictwa EMAG (R&D Centre for Electrical Engineering and Automation in Mining EMAG).

Within several years from the date of its establishment EMAG became a recognized R&D organization, especially in the realm of industrial automation, security systems and systems for monitoring natural hazards, and apparatus. Qualified personnel along with R&D potential were responsible for substantial scientific achievements and made it possible to gain experience in the development and deployment of devices, systems and technologies for the national and international industry. EMAG’s logo became recognized in Poland and abroad, in all places where mining processes are carried out: in the countries of the former Soviet Union, Western Europe and Far East.

On the 1st of January 2007 another consolidation took place: two R&D centres were incorporated into EMAG: Instytut Systemów Sterowania (ISS Institute of Control Systems) and Ośrodek Badawczo-Rozwojowy Gospodarki Energetycznej (OBRGE R&D Centre of Energy Management). Since that time the Institute has been developing its operations in the area of applied IT. Since the 9th of September 2009 the organization has been called Instytut Technik Innowacyjnych EMAG (Institute of Innovative Technologies EMAG).

At the beginning of 2016, after the change of the supervisory authority from the Ministry of Economy to the Ministry of Digital Affairs, the Institute began to conduct research and development in new areas, such as: applied IT, technical IT, IT in monitoring. In addition, EMAG continues laboratory testing related to certification and attestation.

From April 1, 2019, the institute co-creates the Łukasiewicz Research Network - the third largest research network in Europe. Łukasiewicz associates 22 institutes, located in 12 cities and employs 7,5 thousand workers. The Łukasiewicz Research Network works for entrepreneurship and supports the development of Polish companies. It provides customers with attractive, complete and competitive business solutions in the areas of automation, chemistry, biomedicine, ICT, materials and advanced manufacturing.

Outstanding staff as well as scientific and research potential allowed for the development of own, rich scientific output, as well as gaining experience in the development and implementation of devices, systems and technologies for the needs of domestic and foreign industry.
